Sheila Clagg Cathey, DMA

Interim Professor of Music in Music Education

Dr. Sheila Clagg Cathey holds a D.M.A. in Music Education, an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership (Principal Track), an M.M. in Composition, an M.M. in Music Theory, and a B.S. in Church Music with a concentration in Piano Performance and a minor in Voice. She holds PK-12 music teaching certifications in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas, as well as elementary and secondary principal certifications in Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Her research interests include computer-aided instruction (CAI) in aural skills; transitions in the impressionistic piano music of Maurice Ravel; public school law; Early College High School (ECHS) and Earn a Degree Graduate Early (EDGE) programs for Choctaw students; improving substitute teacher training; and leadership powers. Her compositional work includes numerous pieces for piano instruction, as well as works for larger ensembles. Selected works include Homage to Oscar Peterson, published in Alfred Music's Signature Series; a large-scale Easter Passion for orchestra, choir, soloists, and drama; and Psalm 19 for choir and piano.

Dr. Cathey is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM), Piano Guild adjudicator, Field Supervisor at East Texas A&M University, thesis chair and dissertation reader for Liberty University Online, and an AP Music Theory reader/rater. She has taught music at the collegiate, elementary, and private studio levels. She previously taught at Texas Christian University, Dallas Baptist University, Webster University, Jefferson College, Oklahoma Wesleyan University, and Tulsa Community College.
