Registrar: Attendance
Students are expected to attend all class meetings for each course in which they are enrolled. You are responsible for understanding and complying with attendance requirements published in the university catalog, the Student Guidebook and the course syllabus. Faculty members will outline attendance expectations in the course syllabus and maintain attendance records for their classes.
The university does not require faculty to report daily attendance and does not maintain centralized records of students' daily class attendance. However, faculty members may maintain records of excused and unexcused absences, as certain financial aid and other programs may require documentation of attendance.
Excused and Unexcused Absences
You are responsible for providing your faculty member with the reason(s) for an absence. The faculty member determines whether the absence is excused.
Absences may be considered excused for reasons such as:
- Participation in a required or authorized university activity
- Verified illness
- Death in your immediate family
- Legal obligations, including required court appearances
- Other reasons determined by the faculty member to be excusable
Excessive Absences
Faculty members may define excessive absences in the course syllabus. If you accumulate excessive absences, the faculty member may recommend that you be dropped from the course.
In such cases, the faculty member will document absences and make a reasonable effort to communicate with you before recommending the drop. The recommendation is submitted through the department head to the appropriate college dean. If approved, the dean forwards the action to the Office of the Registrar.
If you wish to voluntarily drop a course or withdraw from the university, you are responsible for initiating that process.
Makeup Work
You are responsible for requesting makeup work following an absence. If the absence is considered excused by the faculty member, you will be permitted to make up missed work. The method and timeline for completing makeup work are determined by the faculty member.
Upon request, the faculty member will inform you whether makeup work is allowed and whether your absences jeopardize your standing in the course.
Appeals
If you believe your final grade was unfairly affected by attendance requirements, you may appeal under Procedure 13.99.99.R0.05, Student Appeal of Instructor Evaluation.
