Art Facilities Guide: Wathena Temple Fine Arts Building

The Wathena Temple Fine Arts Building was once the Home Economics building when it was built in 1957. In 2004 it underwent major renovations to become a Fine Arts building. It now houses the Ceramics and Photography studios and labs. On the first floor is the Ceramics area, which consists of an open hand-building and wheel-throwing space, a clay mixing room, glaze mixing room, glaze application room, plaster/mold-making room, 4 artist studios and the electric kiln room. It also includes a large outdoor kiln court with a spray booth and the gas kilns. This includes two large Geil gas kilns, along with a raku kiln and soda/salt kiln. The first floor of the Temple Building also includes the large photo lighting studio and a print finishing room for Photography students, which includes a 40” x 60” Bienfang dry mount press.

On the 2nd floor is the rest of the Photography facilities along with several Graduate studios and a Project space for student exhibitions. Photography rooms upstairs include the Equipment Checkout area, the darkroom, the alternative processes lab, the Mac lab and the digital printing lab. Available equipment for students to checkout includes LED strobes, Aputure Light kits and lighting accessories, Digital SLR Mirrorless and Full Frame cameras, 35 mm film cameras, darkroom supplies and frames to borrow for on-campus exhibitions. Digital printers include 17” Canon Pro-1000s, 24” Canon Pro 2100, 24” Epson P7000 and the wide-format 60” Canon imagePROGRAF 9400. The darkroom contains 14 enlargers, while the alternative processes space includes etching presses and UV exposure units.
