The Writing Program
Learning to Write and Writing to Learn
Writing is an invitation to change the world. Learn about interesting topics, investigate your personal and communal literacy practices, build collaboration skills and expand your writing toolkit for ethical and effective writing, both in and beyond the classroom.
What We Do
We believe every student has something valuable to say and experiences worth sharing. Our mission is to help you explore your voice, connect your ideas with others and use writing as a tool for learning and discovery.
Build strong communication skills
Writing and speaking clearly are essential parts of the university's Core Curriculum—and life beyond college. In our classes, you'll practice developing ideas, expressing them effectively, and understanding how your words affect different audiences. You'll also strengthen key skills that Texas emphasizes in its Core Objectives: critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and personal responsibility.
Explore writing's real-world impact
We'll look at how writing shapes the world—how it connects people, influences communities, and makes change happen. You'll experiment with different forms of communication, from essays and podcasts to infographics and collaborative projects.

Our Courses
Often students want to know why they must take writing courses and what they'll learn. We get that. Sometimes the reasons for enrolling in a course are not clear, but in The Writing Program, we want to be as transparent as possible about why these courses are required for all students and what you can hope to learn along the way.

The Writing Showcase
We value curiosity, research, and sharing new ideas. That's why we host The Learning Showcase every semester—a campus-wide event sponsored by the Writing Program, the College of Innovation and Design, and the Office of Student Transition and Support.
All ENG 1302 students take part in the showcase as part of their final project. You'll create a short, engaging presentation based on your own literacy ethnography—showing how different communities use writing and communication to shape who they are and how they connect with the world.
