Announcement
After careful deliberation, the core faculty in the Department of Counseling at East Texas A&M have decided to voluntarily relinquish CACREP accreditation status for the 60-credit-hour Master of Science in Counseling with emphasis in School Counseling, commonly referred to as the “School Counseling + LPC program,” after the Fall 2025 semester (i.e., Dec. 12, 2025). This decision aligns with the scheduled expiration of the school counseling program's current accreditation cycle under the 2009 CACREP Standards.
As a result, current students in the MS in Counseling with an emphasis in School Counseling have until the end of the Fall 2025 semester to graduate with a CACREP-accredited degree in school counseling. Students who are not eligible or opt out of graduating by the Fall 2025 semester will still be able to complete the 60-credit-hour school counseling program for which they initially enrolled.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Dr. Elizabeth Hudson, school counseling program coordinator.

Counselor Exams
Learn about some of the exams you may encounter as part of your counseling preparation.
School Counseling students are required to take the TExES School Counselor Practice Test in preparation for the TExES School Counselor Certification Exam. The TExES School Counselor Practice Test is completed one semester prior to graduation and is designed to assess students to determine if their level of knowledge and skills meets entry-level standards as a school counselor. There are four domains evaluated on this exam: (a) Domain I: Knowledge of Learners, (b) Domain II: The Comprehensive School Counseling Program, (c) Domain III: The Professional School Counselor, and (d) Domain IV: Analysis and Response.
The Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) is a standardized exit exam designed to review the main core counseling concepts. All school and clinical mental health students must pass the CPCE. The exam is a computer-based exam and administered by the Testing Center.
The National Counselor Exam is a standardized test used to assess knowledge, skills and abilities determined to be important for providing effective counseling services. The NCE is an optional exam that is not needed to graduate. However, it is a requirement for counselor licensure in many states, including the state of Texas, and for the National Certified Counselor (NCC) certification.
