Application Process

Applicants for this program must currently be attending a 2-year community college and majoring in a natural science, mathematics, or engineering discipline. The deadline to apply for for the 2026 program is January 16, 2026. 

The steps to apply are below.

  1. Complete the online submission application at the following link:  Research Experience for Undergraduates Application Form .  A letter of intent (~ 500-1000 words) summarizing your training background, career goals and area of research interest is a part of this application.  You are able to copy/paste on the form.
  2. Electronically send official transcripts from the community colleges attended to [email protected] .
  3. Two (2) reference letters should be sent directly from persons recommending you for the program to [email protected] . 

We prefer that you send the official transcripts and confidential reference letters electronically by email but they may also be sent via the US Mail to the address below.

Notification of acceptance will be made within four weeks and all participants will be required to make a formal commitment to the program by the last day of February.

Student Support

Funding by the National Science Foundation

This program is funded by the National Science Foundation, which is currently interested in promoting the transfer of students from community colleges to universities, especially students majoring in the fields of science or engineering. An early research experience is believed to be very valuable in the progress of students toward careers in technical disciplines. The program participants will be involved as a group in an intense series of research training workshops as well as field trips and recreational excursions. The research experience will certainly be a valuable credential for any student planning a career in Chemistry, Physics or related discipline.

Individual Awards

Each of the participants will receive a stipend of $7,000 in addition to paid housing next door to the Science Building and the Campus Recreation Center, paid tuition and fees for college credit, research supplies, and travel expenses. The total package has a value of about $10,000.
