Batool is currently pursuing a PhD in Computational Linguistics at East Texas A&M University, where she is expanding her research at the intersection of language, technology, and education. She holds a strong background in applied linguistics and has taught college-level courses both in the United States and abroad. Before joining ETAMU, she served as a Teaching Assistant at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), where she supported undergraduate courses in linguistics and academic writing. In addition to her teaching experience, Batool has worked extensively in writing support roles at both the university level in Jordan and as a Graduate Assistant at the Writing Center in the United States. These roles have allowed her to mentor students through the writing process across diverse academic disciplines and language backgrounds. Her experience as a professional translator has further deepened her understanding of cross-linguistic structures and multilingual communication. In her current role as a Graduate Assistant Teacher of Record (GAToR), she teaches College Reading and Writing while continuing to support student success through her work with the Writing Center. Batool is especially passionate about inclusive pedagogy and supporting multilingual and first-generation students in higher education.

During her Master's studies at Jordan University of Science and Technology, Batool served as a Teaching Assistant, where she supported faculty in delivering lectures, mentoring students, and contributing to ongoing research projects. This experience deepened her passion for academic instruction and student engagement. Alongside her teaching, she worked as a professional translator, which enhanced her sensitivity to language variation and cross-cultural communication. Her combined experience in instruction, translation, and academic research allows her to support students holistically, helping them grow not only as writers but as critical thinkers and confident communicators. She is deeply committed to fostering a supportive, inclusive classroom environment where every student can thrive.

A Conversation with Batool

How do you help students?

In my classroom, writing is not just about rules. It is about finding a voice, building confidence, and learning to think with clarity. I guide students through the entire writing journey, from generating original ideas to crafting strong arguments and revising with purpose. I encourage them to see writing as a tool for empowerment, not a task to fear. My teaching especially supports multilingual and first-generation college students, creating an environment where language becomes a source of connection rather than limitation. Whether in person or online, my goal is to transform writing from something they avoid into something they own.

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending East Texas A&M?

East Texas A&M provides an inclusive and supportive academic environment where students are encouraged to explore their intellectual curiosities. The university offers extensive resources, such as the Writing Center, to ensure academic and personal growth. The faculty are approachable and the collaborative atmosphere fosters both academic success and professional development.

Why did you choose your major/what draws you to your discipline?

I chose to specialize in Computational Linguistics because it seamlessly integrates my passion for language with cutting-edge advancements in technology. This interdisciplinary field not only facilitates a deeper understanding of how language can be processed by machines but also enables transformative applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, natural language processing and machine learning. The potential of this field to revolutionize the way we communicate and interact with technology is what truly excites me, and I am eager to contribute to its ongoing innovation and development.

What inspires you to keep pushing boundaries in your academic and professional life?

I am driven by the belief that learning is a lifelong journey, and I am constantly inspired by the intersection of language, technology and human interaction. The dynamic nature of computational linguistics offers endless opportunities for discovery, and I am excited by the challenge of exploring new frontiers in artificial intelligence and natural language processing. I find great fulfilment in the idea that my work could contribute to innovations that reshape communication and bridge gaps across cultures and technologies. This vision fuels my desire to push beyond conventional limits, not only in my academic pursuits but in every aspect of my professional life.
