Learning Systems and Discovery Librarian

Ashlie Hight is currently in grad school and looking forward to starting her career as a librarian after graduation. She is working on a library science degree with a focus on information organization, and she loves it! When she is not working or going to school, Ashlie is probably spending time with her adopted border collie mix named Owen, who has stolen her heart. Ashlie also loves books, and she enjoys giving them away when she is finished reading them so other people can enjoy them, too. She has saved a few of her favorites, though!

How can I help you?

I help students by ensuring they have reliable access to the library resources, tools, and services they need to succeed academically. I help make it easier for students to find and access scholarly materials, whether they are learning on campus or online. My goal is to improve the student learning experience by connecting library resources with coursework and supporting technologies that promote student success.

What do you like most about your career?

I truly enjoy my job. The work itself is engaging and continually evolving, which means I am always learning something new. From managing library systems and discovery services to supporting the learning management system and working with the Innovative Digital Learning office, each day brings new opportunities to solve problems and improve the user experience for students and faculty.

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending East Texas A&M?

East Texas A&M has been a welcoming and supportive community since I first stepped onto campus for my interview in 2016. I am proud to be part of an institution where people genuinely care about students, faculty, and staff, and where collaboration, openness, and the sharing of ideas are encouraged. Most importantly, East Texas A&M is a place where individuals are committed to helping others achieve their academic goals and preparing them for success beyond graduation.

How has your role changed since you began working at East Texas A&M?

I started my career at East Texas A&M as a cataloging assistant, where I performed copy cataloging and processed print books. After earning my library degree, I moved into the Systems Librarian role and expanded my focus to library systems, discovery services, and technology support. I also collaborate closely with the outstanding team at Innovative Digital Learning, which allows me to connect technology, information access, and student success by integrating library resources and services into the digital learning environment.

Tell us a little about yourself (educational background, research interests, etc.)

I earned a Master of Library Science from the University of North Texas and a Master of Art degree in Public History from Oklahoma State University. I started my career in the library of Oklahoma State University and then came to East Texas A&M University. My professional interests include library technology, user experience, web accessibility, information discovery, and the ways emerging technologies can improve access to information.
