IACUC – Research with Animals

All teaching and research activities involving animals must be reviewed and approved by East Texas A&M University's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) as well as the attending veterinarian or their delegate.

The Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible for carrying out research and handling animals in compliance with all federal, state and university requirements. As a PI, you must be trained and knowledgeable in appropriate laboratory techniques, safety procedures, hazards associated with working with animals, and responsible conduct of research. Additionally, you are responsible for ensuring that all laboratory staff and students have completed required training.

Research Training

To be eligible for teaching and research activities involving animals, you must successfully pass online training modules from the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) website.

Field Studies vs. Field Research

As you prepare to engage in research, you may be wondering about the differences between field studies and field research. You need to understand the style you are using and the rules and regulations you may need to follow.

IACUC Forms

When conducting or preparing to conduct research involving the study, care or handling of live animals, the university requires that you maintain detailed records on several institutional forms. These records document events such as the purchase, sale, housing, care, or disposition of animal research subjects, and help ensure safe and ethical practices for all involved.

Note: IACUC will only review protocol forms after you have successfully completed all required CITI training.

IACUC Meeting Schedule

IACUC convenes monthly via Zoom, during which time the committee reviews animal care and use protocols and amendments.

To ensure adequate time for IACUC review and consideration, you must submit protocols by the appropriate deadline indicated below. Prescreening by IACUC staff may identify the need for protocol revisions or additional training(s) you may need to complete. These revisions and trainings can delay protocol review; therefore, please submit your protocol in time, and plan accordingly.
