A Legacy of Music, Mentorship and Meaning
Professor Gene Lockhart was legendary at East Texas A&M University—formerly East Texas State University. Beginning in 1969, he taught music literature with a mix of sharp wit, exacting standards, and generous mentorship that left a lasting impression on countless students. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Lockhart's 38-year career included serving multiple terms as music chair, directing the Honors Program, and building the university's renowned Summer Music Camps. He later became vice president for Student and University Advancement. After retirement, he served the community as Commerce's mayor pro tem and as a dedicated CASA volunteer.
