A Conversation with Paulina
Why did you choose your major/what draws you to your discipline?
My background is in engineering, which I've had the pleasure of teaching for over 12 years. However, I hadn't formally studied teaching until now. This program has opened my eyes to so much about becoming a more effective educator, and I've learned a lot about how to better support my students in their learning journeys. The more I dive into education, the more I'm excited about blending my technical knowledge with teaching strategies that truly make a difference.
Describe a project you are working on.
Right now, I'm working with my colleague April to create a dedicated workshop and student commons space for engineering students at McLennan. This has been something our department has needed for a while, and we're thrilled to finally make it happen. These spaces will give students the chance to collaborate, work on projects and really dig into the hands-on work that's at the heart of engineering.
Tell us about an accomplishment you are proud of.
One of the highlights of my year was serving as the moderator for McLennan's Distinguished Lecture Series when we hosted astronaut José Hernández. It was an incredible experience to engage with someone so inspiring, and the whole event was a moment I'll always look back on with pride.
What else would you like to share about yourself or your East Texas A&M experience?
I'm incredibly grateful to the professors I've had at East Texas A&M, especially Dr. Dondlinger in Education Technology and Dr. Ponton in Higher Education. They've been instrumental in shaping my academic path, and their guidance has truly made a difference in my growth as both a teacher and a learner. Additionally, I want to thank my colleague (and wonderful friend) April for doing this entire degree with me. Working with her has been the biggest privilege of my professional career, and I would not be here without her.
