ETAMU Student Recognized for Exceptional Commitment as a Paraprofessional

Elisabeth ‘Lisa' Armendariz, an undergraduate student at East Texas A&M University, was named Paraprofessional of the Year on February 6 at Burnett Junior High School in Wylie ISD. Armendariz is working toward her Bachelor of Science in Education.

This honor represents dedication, hard work and a positive commitment to supporting students. It highlights paraprofessionals who go above and beyond to advocate for students and help them succeed both in and out of the classroom. Staff members at each campus at Wylie ISD vote annually to select one teacher and one paraprofessional for this recognition.

As a paraprofessional, Armendariz works in a specialized unit supporting students with learning disabilities and significant behavioral needs. Her role centers on teaching social skills and emotional regulation strategies to help students function more independently in both specialized and general education settings.

Armendariz typically works closely with a group of 6–12 students over their seventh and eighth-grade years, allowing her to understand their needs and support their growth. She also manages high‑intensity behavioral situations, including physical aggression, defiance, overstimulation and work refusal.

Her overall goal is to help students develop the skills and confidence needed to transition to high school with greater independence.

Campus Principal Levi M. Turner shared uplifting words about Armendariz:

“Lisa builds amazing relationships with our staff, students and families! This was evident by the fact that the staff chose her to be the campus representative for Paraprofessional of the Year! As the campus principal, I wish that I had a whole building full of people like Lisa Armendariz. I'm grateful that our students have her in their classroom.”

Armendariz has worked for Wylie ISD since fall 2023, following her graduation from high school in spring 2023. Through this opportunity, the district also helps cover part of her college tuition. She balances a full-time job while enrolled as a full-time online student. Her strong time management and organization skills help her stay committed to her job and education.

“This award was a powerful reminder from God that even through challenges and long days, I am exactly where He wants me to be, doing purposeful work that I love,” Armendariz said.
