World-Renowned Percussionist Michael Burritt Performs with ETAMU Students

Students in the School of Music at East Texas A&M University performed alongside one of the world's leading percussionists on the evening of March 1, as Michael Burritt joined the university's percussion program for a special guest residency and concert.

Burritt, director of percussion at the prestigious Eastman School of Music, appeared as a featured soloist with the East Texas Percussion Group and performed a marimba solo composed by him. His visit centered on collaboration and student engagement, including working directly with Percussion Ensemble I students in rehearsal and performance preparation.

Under the direction of Brian Zator, regents professor of music and director of percussion at East Texas A&M, the concert highlighted the depth and versatility of the university's percussion studio. Zator, who has led the program since 2001, has built a nationally recognized percussion program known for performance excellence and competitive success.

“This concert was a wonderful opportunity for our students to work at a high level with a world-class musician,” Zator said. “Having him perform with the ensemble and teach our students brought an energy and professionalism that was incredibly inspiring.”

For prospective students, the evening demonstrated how East Texas A&M provides direct access to internationally acclaimed artists while maintaining a close-knit, mentorship-driven learning environment. Through residencies like Burritt's, students gain experience performing at a professional level—a hallmark of the university's commitment to preparing musicians for successful careers.
