ETAMU Hosts Regional Rural Med Camp To Build Healthcare Pipeline in East Texas
East Texas A&M University hosted the Regional Rural Med Camp April 16–17, bringing high school students from across the region to campus for an introduction to careers in healthcare.
The camp, organized through the Texas A&M University System, provided students with early exposure to medical, nursing and allied health professions. Participants engaged in hands-on activities, connected with faculty and explored educational pathways designed to prepare them for careers in healthcare. Some of the topics covered were head-to-toe health assessments, bandaging and basic life support measures.
Students from Bland ISD, Celeste ISD, Commerce ISD, Cumby Collegiate ISD, DeKalb ISD, Hamilton ISD, Lone Oak ISD, North Hopkins ISD, Pittsburg ISD, Queen City ISD, Quinlan ISD, Rivercrest ISD, Stephenville ISD and Wolfe City ISD participated in the camp, which took place at the Rayburn Student Center.
The event reflects East Texas A&M's growing role in developing the healthcare workforce for East Texas, particularly in rural and underserved communities. By introducing students to these pathways early, the university is helping expand access and build a sustainable pipeline of future professionals.
Through its School of Nursing and programs in health and human performance, the university emphasizes both academic preparation and real-world experience. Students in these programs develop clinical skills through simulation labs and applied learning opportunities while building a strong foundation in science and patient care.
East Texas A&M also offers flexible pathways such as a fully online RN-to-BSN program, allowing working nurses to advance their education through a competency-based, self-paced format.
Initiatives like the Regional Rural Med Camp highlight the university's commitment to increasing access to healthcare careers, strengthening regional partnerships and preparing the next generation of professionals to serve communities across East Texas.
