Counseling Professor Earns IAAOC Educator Excellence Award

Dr. Michael K. Schmit, department head and professor of counseling at East Texas A&M University, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Addictions/Offender Counselor Educator Excellence Award from the International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors (IAAOC).

IAAOC, a division of the American Counseling Association (ACA), recognizes professionals dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by addiction and criminal behavior through counseling, education and advocacy. Schmit was honored at the ACA National Convention in Columbus, Ohio, on April 9.

“I'm deeply honored to receive this award,” Schmit said. “Over the past decade, training future counselors has allowed me to expand my impact. This recognition reflects both my passion for teaching and my commitment to supporting those affected by addiction.”

“Michael epitomizes what it means to be a counselor in the field of addiction,” said Dr. LaVelle Hendricks, president-elect for the IAAOC and professor of counseling at ETAMU. “He has devoted his life to this profession, not lonely to victims of drug abuse but to students and people in the community at large.”

The Department of Counseling at East Texas A&M prepares students for careers in clinical mental health and school counseling through flexible, hands-on programs designed to lead to licensure. With experienced faculty and real-world training opportunities, the program equips graduates to meet the growing demand for qualified counselors in Texas and beyond.
