Chancellor Glenn Hegar Visits East Texas A&M as Part of Statewide Tour
Glenn Hegar, the new chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, visited East Texas A&M University on Wednesday, July 16, as part of a statewide tour of the A&M System's 12 regional universities and eight state agencies. As the new chancellor, Hegar will lead one of the largest systems of higher education in the United States.

According to an A&M System press release, Hegar is using the visits as an opportunity to gather input from university and agency leaders and outline his priorities.
“He will emphasize academic excellence, operational efficiency, innovation in applied research and a renewed focus on developing the System's regional universities to prepare students for high-demand careers in Texas,” the release said.
During Wednesday's visit to East Texas A&M, Hegar took a campus tour with student leaders and a project site tour of new university facilities, including the Event Center and the Agricultural Multipurpose Education and Training Center. The visit also included a reception with community leaders, including area school superintendents and state and local officials, and meetings with ETAMU President Mark Rudin, the university's executive team, and students.
Hegar began in his new role on July 1, following Chancellor John Sharp's retirement. Previously, Hegar served in elected office for more than 20 years, including in the Texas House, the Texas Senate, and as Texas Comptroller, where he managed the state's budget.
“The Texas A&M University System remains committed to enhancing the student experience and driving economic growth,” said Chancellor Hegar. “I'm proud to see East Texas A&M rising to the challenge. I am thrilled to see how the university is delivering relevant coursework, pioneering research and embodying the hardworking spirit that defines East Texas.”
