AI 75 Honors ETAMU Professor for Leadership in Artificial Intelligence

East Texas A&M University faculty member, Dr. Christian F. Hempelmann, professor of computational linguistics and director of the Semantic Artificial Intelligence and Creativity Laboratory, has been recognized among the region's leading innovators in the third annual 2026 AI 75 Innovators in DFW list.

AI 75 is an annual list recognizing 75 of the most impactful AI leaders in Dallas-Fort Worth. These individuals are selected by the Dallas Innovates editorial team and presented in partnership with the Dallas Regional Chamber. The list includes researchers, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, professors and other professionals whose work is advancing artificial intelligence.

Hempelmann leads progress through his contributions to computational humor research and his expansion of East Texas A&M's AI presence. His AI initiatives and the Semantic Artificial Intelligence and Creativity Laboratory help prepare students for emerging careers in artificial intelligence, with on-campus colleagues such as Dr. Omar Elariss and collaborators worldwide.

In addition to shaping East Texas A&M's AI curriculum and leading its AI Initiative, he has collaborated with industry partners, including serving as an applied scientist at Amazon's Grand Challenge Lab. He also brings experience from previous roles in private‑sector AI research.

“The recent hype in generative AI has pushed technologies with this label to the forefront, for better and worse. With East Texas A&M's M.S. in AI, we strive to deliver a sustainable education in AI, including a fundamental understanding that prepares students for current opportunities as much as for the next AI,” Hempelmann said.

Hempelmann's inclusion in the 2026 AI 75 Innovators in DFW highlights the impact of his work and the leadership he brings to ETAMU. Through his vision and expertise, he is helping shape the future of AI both on and off campus.
