Texas City Hires ETAMU Instructor as First Police Chief

The City of Snook, Texas, recently announced the hiring of East Texas A&M University adjunct instructor Dr. Steven Huron as its first-ever police chief. Huron currently teaches the “Ethics, Values & Professional Policing” course as part of the university’s Competency-Based Criminal Justice program, which is designed for working law enforcement professionals to provide the skills and knowledge to advance in their careers. Huron joined the faculty at East Texas A&M in 2021.
Holding degrees from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Wayland Baptist University and Keiser University, Huron also serves as an instructor at Northwest Vista College, Northeast Lakeview College and Schreiner University.
Huron boasts more than 20 years of policing experience, first serving with the San Antonio Police Department from 1996 to 2019. He is currently a licensed master peace officer with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) and has more than 6,600 hours of TCOLE training in his career. Huron led the creation of the “Courtesy Officer” smartphone application, which allows businesses to easily hire off-duty police officers for security purposes.
Snook is a growing municipality in Burleson County, located just over 10 miles from College Station, Texas. Founded in the late 1800s by Czech immigrants, the city had remained relatively small, boasting only 506 residents in the 2020 U.S. Census. However, the population is estimated to have doubled to over 1,000 in the last five years, prompting city leaders to consider forming their own police department.
