Alternative Spring Break

The Alternative Breaks program gives students the chance to engage in service-learning during school breaks. Participants travel to communities to address social issues like poverty, education, and environmental conservation, gaining leadership skills and a deeper understanding of societal challenges.

What is ASB?

A service-based spring break trip where students volunteer in communities across the U.S. instead of going on a traditional vacation.

Who can participate?

All current ETAMU students in good academic standing, including undergraduates and graduates.

How do I apply?

Complete the ASB application online or through the Office of Student Engagement. Applications usually open in the fall.

What kind of service is involved?

Projects may involve community development, education, housing, food insecurity, or civic engagement.

Where do trips go?

Destinations vary each year and have included places like Washington D.C., New Orleans, and Florida.

Are there meetings before the trip?

Yes, 5–6 required meetings cover logistics, team building, and service preparation.

Will I get class credit?

No academic credit is given, but service hours or leadership experience may count for other programs.

What are the expectations?

Full participation in service, team activities, fundraising & weekly meetings will be required of all participants.

Who leads the trips?

Each trip is led by trained student site leaders and supported by a faculty/staff advisor.
