A total of seven conference championships and three superlatives were won by East Texas A&M University track and field student-athletes last weekend at Homer Bryce Stadium to cap off the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.

In the team standings, the Lion men placed fourth for the third year in a row, while the women took sixth for the second year in a row. Full results of the meet can be found HERE.

The Lions won seven individual conference titles at the meet, which is tied with last season for the most in the Division I era with all seven being different individuals this year.

Joining Peyton Berry (Argyle), who won the women’s pole vault title on Thursday, were Romi Griese (Salzkotten, Germany) in the women’s discus, Calen Jones (Duncanville) in the men’s high jump, Sandy Sakyi (Bremen, Germany) in the women’s 100 meter hurdles, Enoch Fosuhene (Accra, Ghana) in the men’s 100 meter dash, Jenneil Jacobie (Piat Grand Rivière, Saint Lucia) in the women’s high jump, and Oguz Uyar (Cannakale, Turkey) in the men’s 200 meter dash on Saturday.

Both Griese and Jacobie won their second outdoor conference titles, while it was the first career individual outdoor championships for Berry, Sakyi, Fosuhene, Jones, and Uyar.

The Lions also took home superlatives for the meet as Fosuhene was named the men’s most outstanding performer of the meet, while Amara Idinna (Viry-Châtillon, France) was named the women’s freshman of the year, and Cheyne West (Rochester, England) was named co-men’s freshman of the year.

Both Idinna and West were named freshmen of the year during the indoor season as well.

Men

Jones cleared all four heights on his final attempt, but was the lone competitor in the field to clear 7-0.25 (2.14m) to win the high jump crown. He is the first outdoor conference champion in the high jump for the Lions in the Division I era.

In the first of two races in which they went 1-2, Fosuhene edged out Uyar in the 100 meter dash with times of 10.06 seconds and 10.16 seconds, respectively. Fosuhene continues an impressive streak of four straight SLC titles in the 100 meter dash for East Texas A&M.

Uyar had the edge in the 200 meter dash as he timed 20.33 to win the title, while Fosuhene clocked in at 20.39 seconds. A competitor from East Texas A&M has won the 200 meter dash title in each of the past four seasons as well.

The Lions reached the podium in the 4×100 meter relay for the fourth year in a row as the relay squad of Jayshon Hardimon (Lake Dallas), Uyar, Kingsley Ayebide (Burutu, Nigeria), and Fosuhene took third with a time of 39.80 seconds.

West won the bronze medal in the 110 meter hurdles, running a school-record time of 13.83 seconds. Myles Redding (Waco – University) finished sixth with a time of 46.45 seconds in the 400 meter dash.

Another school record was set by West in the 400 meter hurdles as he ran a time of 50.32 seconds for the silver medal. He was also part of the 4×400 meter relay squad along with Redding, Fosuhene, and Cam Wooley (Frisco – Liberty) that timed 3:10.38 for the bronze medal to wrap up the meet.

The first event of the day for the Lion men was the pole vault and Parker Williams (Decatur) tied for fifth, but placed sixth based on missed attempts with a mark of 16-1.75 (4.92m). Joseph Rolland (Wills Point) took fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 48-6.25 (14.79m).

In the men’s discus, Jeyden Coleman (Humble – Summer Creek) made finals, but placed ninth with a mark of 161-3.0 (49.15m).

Men’s Team Scores

Competing on its home track, SFA won the team title on the men’s side with 164 points and won the title by 40 points. The Lions’ 97 points were 20 points back of UIW for third.

Women

On her first throw of the day, Griese recorded a mark of 172-0 (52.43m), which ended up being the best mark of the meet and secured the conference title, her second straight in the event.

The Lions went 1-2 in the high jump with Jacobie clearing 5-9.25 (1.76m) and Idinna clearing 5-8 (1.73m) for the silver medal. The duo also went 1-2 in the high jump during the indoor conference championships this year. It is the second conference title for Jacobie, who won it in 2024 as well.

Two Lions also reached the podium in the women’s 100 meter hurdles with Sakyi clocking in at 13.30 seconds to win the Southland title and set a new school record, while Idinna took home the bronze medal with a time of 13.42 seconds.

To start the day on the track, the Lion quartet of Sydnee Wilson (Lewisville), Mackenzie Giles (Allen), Niamh Le’Gall (Wallasey, England), and Leah Pettis (McKinney North) narrowly missed the podium, clocking in at 45.25 seconds in the 4×100 meter relay for fourth.

Anete Randma (Tallinn, Estonia) had a time of 4:30.58 for seventh in the 1,500 meter run. Le’Gall finished fifth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.53 seconds.

The Lions wrapped up the meet with a time of 3:43.06 for sixth in the 4×400 meter relay, which was run by Valentine Mesas (Divonne-les-Bains, France), Wilson, Samarah Green (Abilene – Cooper) and Le’Gall.

Women’s Team Scores

Northwestern State took home the team title for the third year in a row and totaled 147.50 points, while the Lions were just 1.50 points away from A&M-Corpus Christi for fifth.
