East Texas A&M Alum Receives Prestigious Outstanding Programmer Award

Telvin James, an East Texas A&M University alum, was recently presented with the Patsy Morley Outstanding Programmer Award. The National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) established this award to recognize individuals who best exemplify outstanding achievement in the field of campus activities advisement. The distinction also pays tribute to the legacy of the late Patsy Morley, a former chair of the NACA board of directors.

James received the award for prioritizing learning-focused programming, mentoring board members in leadership and event planning, building strong campus and community partnerships, and approaching every initiative with creativity and a student-centered focus.

James graduated from East Texas A&M (known then as Texas A&M University–Commerce) in 2022 with a Master of Science in Higher Education. During his time at ETAMU, he said the support he received from faculty made a lasting impact.

“I had great professors who taught me many meaningful lessons that I currently use in my role today,” James said.

He also shared that the program provided a strong foundation for his current career as assistant director of Student Engagement and Leadership at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. James' graduate degree from ET helped him build confidence, develop as a leader and apply practical knowledge in his daily work.

In reflecting on the honor, James offered this advice: “For students pursuing a career in higher education, I always encourage them to know their ‘why,' seek mentorship, build meaningful connections, invest in professional development, set healthy boundaries, use data to strengthen their work and stay committed to continuous learning…”
