Children’s Learning Center Celebrates Week of the Young Child

The Children's Learning Center at Texas A&M University-Commerce celebrated Week of the Young Child April 15-19 with several events for parents and children.

“Week of the Young Child 2013 was so successful!” said Lisa Rhoades, Director of the CLC. “This week was a chance to celebrate the learning opportunities of young children, and to recognize the responsibilities we share for helping them make the most of those opportunities. The staff and administration really enjoyed having our families present for all the events.”

The week started off with a Grab & Go Breakfast for parents sponsored by John Kaulfus, Dean of Campus Life and Student Development. On Tuesday, there was a Family Night Dinner for parents, children and siblings sponsored by Dr. Mary Hendrix, Vice President of Student Access & Success; Randy VanDeven, Vice President of Advancement; and the CLC. Wellness Wednesday was an event for parents to learn more information on Child Abuse Awareness to stop child abuse. Thursday was Teacher Appreciation Day where families were encouraged to show their appreciation to the entire staff of the CLC for all they do for children and families. The week concluded on Friday with “Thank You” Friday, when each child was given a goody bag and a new book courtesy of a private donor to take home with them.

“The Children's Learning Center is committed to quality childcare and education for all children,” said Rhoades. “Research and experience clearly shows that the early years are crucial learning years.”

The Children's Learning Center offers parents, who are university students or faculty/staff, with on-campus child care for children ages six weeks to five years. The CLC was recently awarded national accreditation by The National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs. This honor is only shared with 5-7% of centers in the nation. The CLC is licensed by the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services and earned the additional distinction of “Texas Rising Star” facility in 2010 for exceeding state licensing requirements.
