Admissions Resources: Advanced Placement Program®
The Advanced Placement Program® or AP provides students with an opportunity to take college-level studies and exams while still in high school. By receiving a satisfactory exam score, students can earn from 3 to 13 college credits toward a college degree for each AP exam taken, depending on the exam subject and the policy of the college or university. More than thirty exams in multiple subject areas are offered. For more
information, about taking AP courses and exams, contact your high school counselor.
- Earn College Credit. Depending on your AP exam score, you could earn college credits before leaving high school and moving on to college.
- Save time and money. Earning credit or placement can open up time on your schedule or even let you graduate early.
- Earn Advanced Placement. Your AP exam score may let you skip pre-requisite and/or introductory courses in college
- Stand Out to Colleges/Universities. Taking AP courses in high school may give you an advantage in college. “AP” on your high school transcript shows colleges you've tackled college-level work.
- AP exams are given nationally at designated high schools during the month of May.
- Most exams are 2–3 hours long.
- The first part of the exam is usually multiple-choice questions with the second part usually consisting of free-response questions that require you to generate your own responses.
- Most AP exams are paper-and-pencil tests, but some exams, use recorded audio, some require Art portfolios, and other exams have a completely different format.
- AP exams are graded on a scale of 0-5.
- Scores can be sent to one institution for free by designating the institution in their “My AP” account. You may send additional score reports to other colleges at a cost of $15 for regular processing and $25 for rush processing. Reports can be ordered by logging in your account at apscore.
- If your most recent AP Exam was over four years ago, your AP scores are no longer viewable in the online score reporting system. They have been archived and can only be sent to another institution through a request made via mail or fax.
PLEASE NOTE: Scores for AP exams taken in May are not available to East Texas A&M until mid-July!
