Paris Police Department Swears in East Texas A&M Graduate

East Texas A&M University's Law Enforcement Training Academy (AMLETA) celebrates another successful graduate as Austin Garrison was sworn in as a new officer with the Paris Police Department on June 3 in Paris, Texas.

Garrison completed the five-month Basic Peace Officer Course, graduating in May of 2025. The academy, licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), equips aspiring officers with essential skills, knowledge and ethical training to serve their communities.

City of Paris Clerk Janice Ellis administered the oath of office during a ceremony attended by Mayor Mihir Pankaj, City Manager Rose Beverly, Police Chief Richard Salter, Assistant Chief Randy Tuttle, Captain Doug Thompson and Lieutenant Michael Bankston. Also in attendance were Garrison’s parents, grandparents and children.

When asked how his experience at ETAMU helped prepare him for his new career, Garrison said, “Attending the ETAMU Police Academy prepared me for the real-life experiences as a cop. The class was extremely professional and hands on throughout the whole process. With their classes, I was able to pass the T-Cole exam on the first attempt. The things I learned at that academy I will forever use throughout my police career. I’m very appreciative of the courses they put together.”

Located at East Texas A&M, AMLETA serves as a cornerstone of law enforcement education in the region. The academy's mission is to foster excellence in public safety by preparing both new cadets and seasoned professionals through dynamic instruction and university support.

Garrison joins a department committed to connection, service and community engagement. According to the Paris Police Department, its mission reflects the spirit of the city—one marked by perseverance, grit and a dedication to improving quality of life.

East Texas A&M continues to support regional law enforcement agencies by producing highly-trained, community-minded peace officers who are ready to serve. For more information about the police academy program at ETAMU, contact AMLETA Academy Director Louis Lufkin.
