Transforming Lives Through Leadership: Edwin “Zack” Bernal’s Path of Purpose and Perseverance

At East Texas A&M University, the mission to transform lives is more than words — it's reflected in students like Edwin “Zack” Bernal, whose record of leadership, service, and entrepreneurship demonstrates how education fuels impact far beyond the classroom.

From the start of his college journey, Zack immersed himself in opportunities to lead and make a difference. He founded ETAMU's first Mock Trial team during his freshman year, recruiting and training more than 25 students to understand courtroom law and procedure.

“Building Mock Trial from scratch is something I'll always be proud of,” Zack reflected. “It gave me the chance to help students find their voice, just like others once helped me find mine.”

Zack also served as a Lion Ambassador, SGA Senator, and College of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts Ambassador. Through these roles, he has strengthened student engagement by helping organize events, representing student voices, and reviving programs such as Model UN and the Sigma Alpha Pi Political Science Honor Society. His efforts reflect the College of Business's commitment to developing well-rounded leaders prepared to excel in diverse fields.

His entrepreneurial drive further sets him apart. As the founder of Sterling Social Services LLC, Zack has transformed a one-person idea into a thriving company of 11 employees providing affordable web design for local businesses. Alongside running his company, he also works as an Executive Assistant at Prosperity Fire Protection, one of the largest fire suppression firms in Dallas a position that usually requires years of experience.

Zack credits his involvement at ETAMU, particularly his participation in the Libraries Adobe Group, for helping him build the Excel and data management skills that impressed his current employer.

“When you come from a background where nothing is guaranteed,” he explained, “you learn not to wait for opportunities — you create them.”

Zack's determination to succeed is deeply personal. A first-generation college student, he credits ETAMU professors and mentors for fueling his growth.

“Every professor has taught me something valuable, but what stands out most is how they take the time to understand your goals,” he said. “At ETAMU, you're surrounded by people who believe in you — sometimes before you believe in yourself.”

That spirit of perseverance began well before college. Raised in Dallas, Zack drew inspiration from his mother, who once dreamed of becoming an attorney. His passion for law was sparked at Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet, one of Texas's top-ranked law High Schools, where Mock Trial transformed him from a shy freshman into a confident advocate. Competing at the Texas Capitol and meeting judges fueled his love for advocacy — a passion he now shares with peers at ETAMU.

Zack's journey, from his early days in Dallas to his accomplishments at ETAMU, underscores a powerful message: leadership begins with action. Rising at 5:30 a.m. to journal, reflect, and prepare for the day, he demonstrates discipline, gratitude, and an unwavering belief in growth. His advice for fellow students is simple yet profound:

“Don't wait until you feel ready — start now. Growth happens when you step out of your comfort zone.”

For Zack, success isn't defined by titles but by the impact he leaves on others. His story is a testament to how ETAMU's College of Business empowers students to lead with purpose, serve with heart, and persevere with resilience.
