Lion Alumna Featured in Dallas Observer for Former Athlete Advocacy

The Dallas Observer newspaper recently published a profile on East Texas A&M University alumna Acheil Tac. Tac is the founder of The Athlete’s Advocate, a resource agency aimed at providing retired athletes the direction and support they need to transition to a new career after sports.

Tac earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce (now East Texas A&M) in 2023. While an undergraduate student at the University of North Texas, Tac herself was a student-athlete, playing all four years for the Mean Green Women’s Basketball team. In addition, Acheil has appeared in international competition for the South Sudanese Women’s Basketball team along with her sisters Agang and Adhel. Agang is also a Lion alumna, graduating in 2021 with a B.S. in Learning and Technology while playing for four seasons with the Lion Women’s Basketball team.

In the Dallas Observer piece, Tac explained what led to the creation of The Athlete’s Advocate and how her own struggles following her playing days gave her a firsthand view of the need for support.

“What am I passionate about? What am I interested in? Who have I connected with? What network do I have to leverage and take advantage of?” Tac said. “When I looked at my portfolio and my resume, I was like, ‘Wait a minute, I don’t really have a lot of experience.’ I didn’t have time to do internships… I didn’t have time to join organizations because we were always traveling again for basketball.”

She said that these questions are what led her to pursue an MBA from East Texas A&M. She credits her time at the university with helping her build her network and expertise in order to pursue her current venture.
