East Texas A&M Launches New Biochemistry Degree Program
East Texas A&M University is introducing a new Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in the fall 2025 semester, expanding opportunities for students interested in science, healthcare and technology.
Biochemistry, the study of the chemistry of biological processes, plays a critical role in today's world as advances in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medicine transform industries and everyday life. Demand for professionals with expertise at the intersection of chemistry and biology continues to grow, from developing new medical treatments to addressing challenges in agriculture, nutrition and forensic science.
The new program will provide undergraduates with a strong academic foundation in both chemistry and biology, while also emphasizing hands-on laboratory training and faculty-mentored research. Students will gain marketable skills in experimental design, data analysis and problem-solving. Career paths for graduates may include positions as research scientists, laboratory technicians, bioinformatics analysts, forensic scientists and quality assurance specialists. Many students will also continue their education in medical, dental, pharmacy or graduate schools.
“I believe that the addition of a B.S. in Biochemistry to the programs currently offered within the Chemistry Department will have a transformative effect on the department as well as on the College of Science and Engineering,” said Dr. Thomas West, the department head of the Department of Chemistry.
Students interested in the new biochemistry program can contact Dr. Stephen Starnes or Dr. West for more information.
