IBC – Research with Hazardous Materials

All research conducted by East Texas A&M University employees or students involving any of the agents or materials listed below must be approved by the East Texas A&M Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) before research can begin:

  • Pathogens and potential pathogens of humans, animals or plants;
  • Materials potentially containing human pathogens (including human blood, tissue and cell lines; non-human primate blood, tissue and cell lines);
  • Recombinant DNA (and RNA) including creation or use of transgenic plants and animals;
  • Select agents and toxins, including strains and amounts exempted from the select agent regulations;
  • Any material requiring a Center for Disease Control import license or a United States Department of Agriculture permit.

Biosafety Required Training

Researchers fulfill their training requirements by completing online training modules available on the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) website. All individuals, principal investigators, co-investigators, post-docs, research assistants, undergraduate and graduate students and all other personnel engaged in research must complete the CITI training modules. Depending on the number and complexity of trainings your research area requires, the time to complete your training modules may range from four to eight hours. You may exit and resume the training at any time. Once completed, you will be required to complete a refresher course every three years. A notification will be sent to you before your training's expiration date. At any time, you may return to the training modules and print a certificate.
