Off-Campus Housing

Non-affiliated off-campus housing is only available for students who are not required to live in University-owned on-campus housing. East Texas A&M University does not endorse any specific property. The non-affiliated properties may also provide accommodations to the greater Commerce community.

Housing Information

All full-time, first-year undergraduate students who enroll in face-to-face classes at the main campus in Commerce within one year of high school graduation are required to live on campus or live with their parents/legal guardians within 50 miles (or a one-hour drive) of the Commerce campus.

A Commuter Request will be honored for the following situations:

  • A student attending the Commerce campus but commuting from the home of their parent/guardian within a 50-mile/one-hour radius.
  • A student taking most of their classes online or at another ETAMU site while living at home with their parent/guardian.

Exemption requests for first-year students who are recent high school graduates and are married, have children, are over the age of 21, or have other extenuating circumstances can be made through the Contract Release Request. Please do not sign an off-campus lease until you have submitted your request and received approval.

The Commuter Authorization Request and Contract Release Request are in the housing portal found in myLEO under “Other Applications.”

How to apply

Once you have been fully admitted to East Texas A&M, you may apply for housing. The application opens for the following Academic Year on November 1st. If entering the university mid-year, the Spring Only housing application also opens on November 1st.

How to Apply

  1. myLEO > Apps > Residential Living and Learning
  2. Click the Apply Now button for the term you wish to apply on the housing portal homepage.
  3. Complete the Application.
  4. Watch for next steps in your myLEO email.

Timeline

  • November 1: Application opens
  • April 1: Housing and meal plan contracts open/Form roommate groups
  • May 7: Priority deadline to sign housing/meal plan contracts to receive a time slot to participate in priority room selection
  • May 10: Students check myLEO Housing Portal for random, lottery-generated room selection time slot after 5 p.m.
  • May 11-28: Students with priority room selection time slots log-in to myLEO Housing Portal to select a room. If you do not select a bed within 48 hours of your time slot opening, your time slot and ability to select a room will be removed.
  • June 1: Students who missed priority deadline continue to apply for housing and select room when assigned time slot opens.
  • July 15: Students who are not fully registered for Fall 2027 and/or still have a Bacterial Meningitis hold on their account are dropped from housing and meal plan contracts

Important Notes:

  • There is a $125 application fee. If you are experiencing financial hardship, Residential Living and Learning can defer the fee to your fall balance after February 1st. If you need this option, please email [email protected] and request for your fee to be deferred to your Fall balance.
  • Students must have their Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination record on file to live on campus unless they are over 22 years old.
  • Any student who is not fully registered for classes by July 15th will be dropped from their housing and meal plan and the student will lose their room assignment.
  • Students in the Honors College and student athletes complete the same application process as all other students. They do have a different room assignment process and should speak to their advisor/coach if they have questions.
  • Room Selection Timeslots are assigned by a random computer-generated lottery system. All students who have signed a housing contract by May 7th will be entered into the lottery and will receive a random timeslot to select a room.
  • All students living on campus are required to have a meal plan. Students who graduated high school in 2027 or 2026 must have the 17 or 19 meal plan.
  • Students need to check their myLeo email on a regular basis to receive information on the application process, room selection, move-in, etc.
