Honoring Gene Lockhart

A Legacy of Music, Mentorship, and Meaning.

Professor Gene Lockhart was a legendary presence at East Texas A&M University—formerly East Texas State University. Beginning in 1969, he taught music literature with a mix of sharp wit, exacting standards, and generous mentorship that left a lasting mark on countless students. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Lockhart's 38-year career included serving multiple terms as Music Chair, directing the Honors Program, and building the university's renowned Summer Music Camps. He later became Vice President for Student & University Advancement, and after retirement gave back as Commerce's Mayor Pro Tem and a dedicated CASA volunteer.
